THE EU-INDIA RESOURCE EFFICIENCY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY PARTNERSHIP

THE EU-INDIA RESOURCE EFFICIENCY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY (RECE) PARTNERSHIP
On June 2, 2018, at the World Environment Day Celebration in Delhi, the Government of India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the European Union Delegation to India signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) for the implementation of the EU’s Resource Efficiency Initiative for India (EU-REI). This followed the initiation of the phase I project of the European Union (EU)-Resource Efficiency Initiative for India (EU-REI) in 2017.
The 2020 EU-India Joint Declaration on Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy (RECE) initiated the the EU-India RECE Partnership. It brings together representatives of relevant stakeholders from India, EU and its Member States (MS), including governments, businesses, academia and research institutes. It aims to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the EU and India in areas of RE&CE.

About European Union – Resource Efficiency Initiative (EU-REI)

Increasing resource consumption to sustain India’s robust economic growth has meant an increase in the extraction of primary raw materials by about 420% between 1970 and 2010, dominated by the extraction of abiotic materials (minerals and metals). India’s material demand in 2010 was the 3rd largest in the world, after that of China and the United States, with a consumption of about 7.2% of globally extracted raw materials in that year. A study from UNEP in 2016 indicates that consumption rates in India in 2015 may have already overtaken those of the USA. If current trends continue, India’s material requirements are projected to be 15 billion tonnes by 2030 and 25 billion tonnes by 2050, with fossil fuels, metals and minerals accounting for the biggest increases.

Consortium

The European Union – Resource Efficiency Initiative (EU-REI) is implemented on behalf of the European Union by a consortium led by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Confederation of the Indian Industry (CII) and Adelphi. The EU-REI aims to facilitate partnerships between Indian and European businesses and stakeholders on Resource Rfficiency (RE) and Circular Economy economy in sectors of interest.

Resource Efficiency and
Circular Economy

EU-Resource Efficiency Initiative (EU-REI) works to support the various stakeholders at national, state and city level on resource efficiency and circular economy. It seeks to develop a broad-based discourse on resource efficiency and circular economy, undertake identification of relevant measures at different levels with relevant actors, and facilitate partnerships and collaborations for development of innovative circular solutions.
Implementation of circular economy solutions in inclusive value chains and circular business models are fostered in two selected states in India.
